The question most commonly asked of Africycle is this: "How do I donate a bicycle?"
Here's how.
1. Please print THIS FORM, fill it out and bring it with you when you drop off the bicycle (more on this in step 2). This form will ensure the bicycle is not stolen. Which is important to Africycle.
2. Bring your bicycle to The Hub bike shop, located at 141 Reach Street, Unit 7, Uxbridge, ON L9P 1L3. You can leave your form in the mail box outside the front door, or come In if we’re open!
In addition to dropping a bicycle off at The Hub, you can check the Africycle events page to see if there may be a Bicycle Collection Day setup in your area.
3. It costs approximately $50 to ship a bicycle to Malawi. While most certainly not a requirement, we do ask you to consider making a $50 donation alongside your bicycle donation. (If a financial donation is not possible at this time, that's okay, we really do appreciate the bicycle!) Not every bicycle Africycle collects goes directly to Malawi. In fact, donated bicycles are seperated into one of four categories, most are sent to Malawi, others are resold at The Hub, some are reserved for local donation, while the remaining bicycles are broken down for parts and recycled. How we decide where bicycles go is based on our knowledge of which bicycles are most appropriate for use in Malawi and what bicycles are best suited to be refurbished and resold here in Canada.
For example; A lightly used road bike in very good condition could be worth as much as $200 for resale in Canada. Translated, that could mean 4 adult sized mountain bikes (best for Malawi) shipped to Africa, as opposed to one road bike that would be less suitable for use in Africa. Of course, we are defining 'suitable' as bicycles which are durable, with relatively simple mechanics, for which replacement parts are readily available locally.
If you happen to have a bicycle in your shed, garage, yard, or basement collecting dust, consider breathing new life into it by donating it to Africycle.
