Established in August 2007, the 'Zomba shop' has been our focus of operations for Africycle in Malawi.  Distributing up to 60 bicycles per month since its inception, the shop has barely been able to keep up with the demand for bicycles in the Zomba district alone.  Employing 8 full time staff (mechanics, helpers and custodians) the shop has not only become a source of bicycles for the community, but of employment for Malawians also.

Africycle is providing bicycles that are durable, affordable and are part of a social enterprise that benefit the rider (reliable bicycles) and support the community as a whole (through partners like Grace Orphan Care).  The cycle of poverty is therefore broken, as Malawians support their community through local business transactions.  Releasing people from living in poverty, from depending solely on the kind gifts of others, they are empowered to use the skills and tools they’ve been given to provide for their needs.

By generating revenue to develop the community, the shop is a way to sustain projects that focus on education, health and community.  In Zomba, our partner is Grace Orphan care which supports more than 200 children daily with programs aimed at meeting the most basic of needs; food, clothing/supplies, education but most of all; hope.
